A stroke is an interruption of blood supply to the brain, also called a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). It occurs when a blood vessel is blocked or ruptures, reducing oxygen and nutrients to the brain and causing brain tissue damage. There are two main types: ischaemic stroke (80%), caused by a blockage such as a thrombus or embolus, and haemorrhagic stroke (20%), caused by bleeding.
